CPV codes on Contracts Finder notices — reading the trade fit line
Common Procurement Vocabulary (CPV) codes are the eight-digit trade labels buyers attach to tender notices. For facilities, cleaning and trades SMEs, CPV is often the fastest bid/no-bid gate on a ten-minute notice read — before you open the ITT pack. This guide explains what CPV is, where it appears on Contracts Finder and Find a Tender, and how to use it in triage. Not bid writing.

What CPV codes are
CPV is a standard EU/UK classification system for describing what a contract is for. Each code is an eight-digit number (sometimes shown with a dash after the first two digits, e.g. 90911200 for window-cleaning services). Buyers pick one or more CPV codes when publishing a notice so search engines, alerts and digests can route opportunities to the right trades.
Official reference: the Common Procurement Vocabulary (CPV) list on GOV.UK (OGL v3.0). You do not need to memorise the full list — you need a shortlist of codes that match your trade and a habit of checking them on every notice.
Where CPV appears on a notice
On Contracts Finder and Find a Tender, CPV usually sits in a labelled field near the top of the notice — often “CPV codes” or “Common procurement vocabulary”. You may see:
- One primary CPV — the main trade label for the lot.
- Additional CPV codes — secondary labels (e.g. cleaning plus waste disposal).
- Multi-lot notices — each lot may carry its own CPV; read the lot you would bid for, not the umbrella notice alone.
CPV complements — but does not replace — the description text. A notice coded 90911200 (window cleaning) with a description about grounds maintenance is a mismatch worth a human read, not an automatic Pass.
CPV codes BidFit users watch for soft FM and trades
These are common on notices in the roughly £10k–£250k band BidFit targets. Use them as a starting shortlist, not an exhaustive list:
| CPV | Description (summary) | Typical fit |
|---|---|---|
| 90911200 | Window-cleaning services | Window cleaners, abseil/rope access firms |
| 90911300 | Building-cleaning services | Commercial cleaning, FM sub-contractors |
| 90910000 | Cleaning services (general) | Broader cleaning lots — read description |
| 50700000 | Repair and maintenance of building installations | Electrical, HVAC, fabric maintenance |
| 45261900 | Roof maintenance work | Roofing, guttering, cladding repairs |
| 77314000 | Grounds maintenance services | Landscaping, grounds, open spaces |
| 45111200 | Site preparation and clearance work | Site clearance, minor civils |
Search the full CPV list on GOV.UK when your trade sits between categories — e.g. pest control, waste collection, or specialist coatings each have their own codes.
Using CPV in a bid/no-bid triage
On a ten-minute notice read, treat CPV as the first trade-fit gate alongside geography and value:
-
Match CPV to your profile. If none of the listed codes sit in your trade shortlist, mark trade fit Fail unless the description clearly says otherwise.
-
Watch for catch-all codes. Broad codes like 90910000 (cleaning services) or 45000000 (construction work) need a description read — they attract noise in alerts.
-
Check multi-code notices. A secondary CPV for waste or security may signal scope you cannot deliver — Fail or Unknown depending on wording.
-
Do not bid on CPV alone. A matching code does not override framework-only wording, turnover gates, or a dead clock. Run the full bid/no-bid checklist.
CPV in portal alerts vs BidFit digest
Contracts Finder saved searches can filter by CPV — see the soft FM Contracts Finder filters guide. Many SMEs still get inbox noise because:
- Buyers pick broad CPV codes that sweep multiple trades.
- Keyword filters and CPV filters overlap, doubling emails.
- CPV does not filter geography, value band, or framework-only lots.
BidFit’s free weekly digest layers trade, region and value on top of official portal data — CPV is one input, not the only gate. When a notice survives triage and you want every gate scored, see when a notice match needs a memo.
What BidFit will not do
- Not bid writing or SQ completion.
- Not guarantee CPV hygiene on every notice. Buyers miscode; always read the description.
- Not replace Contracts Finder or Find a Tender. Official portals remain the source of truth.
Questions
What is a CPV code on a UK tender notice?
A Common Procurement Vocabulary (CPV) code is an eight-digit trade classification buyers attach to tender notices on Contracts Finder and Find a Tender. It helps route opportunities to the right sector. For SMEs, checking CPV against your trade shortlist is often the fastest first gate on a notice read.
Can I filter Contracts Finder by CPV code?
Yes. Contracts Finder saved searches can include CPV filters alongside keywords and value bands. Broad CPV codes still produce noise — combine CPV with geography and value filters, or use a profile-matched digest on top of official alerts.
Does BidFit use CPV codes in the digest?
Yes — CPV is one of several signals BidFit uses to match notices to your trade profile in the free weekly or £19/mo daily digest. A matching CPV does not replace the full bid/no-bid gate set on a named notice.
